The Survivors Golfday
The Survivors Golf Day was born ten years ago when Gerhard van der Westhuizen and Rayno Strauss decided to do something concrete to help cancer patients in need with their medical expenses. Cancer survivors themselves, they experienced firsthand how expensive treatment is – and decided to use the game they love, golf, to make a difference.
What started as a small fundraising initiative with just 24 players has since grown into an annual golf day at Pretoria Country Club that is fully booked within weeks and even has a waiting list. Today, 144 players take part, and the day raises nearly R2 million annually – an amount that already far exceeds the total proceeds of the first few years.
