Atterbury Foundation NPC
The Atterbury Foundation NPC was established in 2007 as a Level 1 B-BBEE certified non-profit organisation in tandem with Atterbury Trust. This entity focuses on social transformation in partnership with previously disadvantaged communities to create training opportunities and initiate community upliftment projects. All contributions to the Atterbury Foundation NPC qualify for B-BBEE scorecard purposes.
At the Atterbury Foundation NPC, that difference becomes visible every day, in classrooms, preschools and communities where children receive the support they need to reach their full potential.
As a Level 1 B-BBEE certified non-profit organisation, the Foundation offers businesses the opportunity to channel their socio-economic development funds into projects with measurable and sustainable impact.
Students
The Interest-Free Bursary Loan Initiative offers a new generation of leaders the opportunity to gain qualifications without financial burden and then enter the workforce through our network of collaborators and supporters.
However, it is not just about financial assistance. Mentorship and a sense of community are important to Atterbury Trust, and relationships with bursary students are therefore built through regular mentoring sessions.
Leersaam
The Leersaam project focuses on remedial teaching for foundation phase learners.
The need for academic support in these communities is significant, while teachers are already operating under tremendous pressure. By enabling additional remedial classes, learners are not only helped to catch up on learning backlogs, but teachers are also supported in achieving better outcomes in their classrooms.
The project also enables us to involve some of our Atterbury Trust/Foundation education bursary students as tutors, giving them the opportunity to earn extra income.
Preschool nutrition project: Voedsaam
The Atterbury Foundation NPC is actively involved in preventing stunted growth among young children. Research shows that 28.8% of children in South Africa under the age of 5 are affected by stunted growth.
In collaboration with our implementation partners, we ensure that these children receive a nutritious breakfast daily in order to improve their physical and cognitive development in the long term.
Children are monitored monthly to obtain accurate statistics regarding stunted growth.
Infrastructure – upgrading projects
The Foundation’s involvement extends beyond nutritional support alone. By supporting infrastructure projects at various early development centres, we help create safe, dignified and stimulating spaces where children can get the best possible start in life.
This support includes, among other things, the upgrading of playgrounds, the installation of shade nets, the construction of decks, the improvement of sanitary facilities, as well as the refurbishment of play equipment. At centres such as Angels of Grace in Hammanskraal, Sun Rise Day Care Centre and Akkerland Kleuterskool, practical infrastructure improvements are helping to create better learning environments for young children.
Where children previously had limited access to safe play areas or proper sanitary facilities, these projects now contribute to more functional and dignified spaces. Together with nutritional support, such as the daily provision of StartWell porridge, these initiatives strengthen the centres’ capacity to serve their communities in a sustainable way.
Through collaboration with partners and communities, existing resources are improved and expanded, so that every centre is better equipped to support children’s development, safety and wellbeing.
